Stories of social cohesion

To talk about social cohesion we started from its stories, mapping the best practices, projects and realities made up by people or institutions, that explain – sometimes better than numbers – what it means to create social cohesion in Italy. We tried to reveal them through interviews, articles, videos and images. This section is constantly updated.

It has been reviewed on Tripadvisor as “Civico Sociale, the restaurant of legality”. This restaurant in Cassino (FR), and its good dishes, seems to be really enjoyable. There are many other reasons to appreciate this restaurant, though.

Civico Sociale is indeed a business project, but also a laboratory of social projects looking, in all its aspects, to find the ethical way between affordability and impact on the community.

Their virtuousity starts with the staff, which supports the local welfare by employing disadvantaged individuals, thus making the dignity of work the starting point of a genuine process of social redemption. In the kitchen there are Simone and Alessandro. They grew up in family home and attended the Hospitality Institute. Finding a job wasn’t easy, almost impossible. Prejudices, fears. Then the social cooperative bet on them, and the result is this: a 50-seat restaurant, open at lunch and dinner, that from 2014 combines ethics and taste.

To make a long story short, the secret of their kitchen is that it’s good. Good hands kneading, good raw material, zero-mileage products coming from the territories confiscated to organized crime (Libera and NCO) and organic too.

If it’s important to know what you have in your dish, here there are high guarantees, because in addition to kitchen delicacies they support a virtuous project that, from people to products, endorsing an ethical path of labor exploitation, legality and environmental sustainability – all with a single dish!

Civico Sociale is a project of the Social Cooperative “I Naviganti”, a group of operators who for several years have been designing and conducting new ways of social intervention, which respond effectively to community needs, new ways of involvement and enhancement in particular disabled, drug addicts and minors.

The platform provides also advises and counseling, made by the five souls who thought, wanted and realized this project. It’s about entrepreneurship on the web, where its gender characteristic it’s only a transitory feature, but not accidental; an additional element, but not the one essential to their success.

Besides realizing their vision, Agnese, Virginia, Martina, Nicole e Caterina realize the vision of associations, administrations and also private individuals who, starting from the bottom, want to find ways to make their project a reality.

Women are often the pillar of the community, from whose strength depends the family well-being and organization. The cooperative “Crinali” was created to protect this heritage. Operating in Milan since 2002, it associates 28 women from 11 different countries with different specificities and professionalism, who work together to provide people of different cultures and origins paths of psychological and physical well-being, claiming the right to health and the development of their potential – with particular attention to women’s lives and migrant families, while respecting cultural and gender differences.

In partnership with public and private entities in Milan area, the cooperative Crinali strives to offer support migrants their physical and psychological problems, basically related to inclusion and integration issues.

The cultural mediation activity starts from linguistic translation, especially to become a network of social confrontation and support, and to simplify the access to other supportive services which take care of the psycho-physical well-being for them and their families.

The cross-cultural mediation is the next step offered to those families and individuals who need help to deal with the important – and often painful – step of migration, choosing to grow in a different society from their homeland. This service offers psychotherapy and counseling -individual or for the entire family – diagnostic paths, as well as supervision and interview that are useful stages to help the inclusion of family nuclei and to better understand how to handle discomfort and relational difficulties, which come along with these life events. This support is also offered for health courses, offering access to a medical service for women, children and young people through cultural mediation that enable a mediated and gentle approach to physical health – as well as mental and emotional – to migrants who access the various offices.

The Cooperative is also in charge of workshops on different aspects, from working with migrants to school activities counseling.

Born within the Diocese of Ragusa (Sicily) the project “Costruiamo Saperi” (Building Knowledge), funded by the Foundation with the South and intended to fifty foreigners – selected through a public call – coming from 14 countries and 4 continents, who will be trained to self-entrepreneurship. Since November 2015, when the training workshop have started, 30 men and 20 women are facing a year of preparation, followed by a period of scholarship, intended to give them the tools of knowledge required to create new agricultural cooperatives and construction industry.

The property of the Diocese support the project, the beautiful Tenuta Magni, a short walk distant from Ragusa, and 10 hectares of land that will become a testing ground for future entrepreneurs. A place that aims to be not only a source of beauty, but livelihood. The workshop in the historical center, meeting place and a temporary store, will support the project too.

Cooperation among foreign nationals and Italian citizens is the main tool for the enhancement of human dignity as well as for the professional growth of both parties. The proposed training, rather than being an answer to job search, is an investment in quality, having the ambition to train motivated and refined craft skills people. An example? The crops of saffron, “Cottoia” fava bean of Modica, “Cosaruciaro” bean of Scicli, the old cabbage of Rosolina, the chuckling vetch, the large fava bean and the black chickpea of Leonforte – all marked as Slow Food productions.

Part of the work will see participants engaged in the architectural redevelopment of Villa Magni, that step by step will grow its potential as a place of culture, dating, aggregation and knowledge.
