Sandrino Porru, 56 years of age, was born in Villanovafranca, in the province of Cagliari. A bank clerk by profession, he has been involved in the social sector focusing on disabilities ever since 1981 where he filled several institutional positions until he was awarded the presidency of the Committee for Fund Management in the Voluntary Sector of the Sardinia region. His career as wheelchair athlete  started in 1982 and he won several Italian paralympic athletic titles in disciplines such as long distances, middle distances and speed racing. He wore the blue jersey at the Paralympic Games in Seul (1988) and in Barcellona (1992). In 2000 he was elected national councilor of the Italian Disabled Sports Federation and two years later he joined the national Council of the Italian Paralympic Committee. Since 2010, he has been the Chairman of FISPES (Italian Federation of Paralympic and Experimental Sports) that is engaged in palympic athletics, wheelchair rugby, and new emerging disciplines such as football for physically disabled people (football 7 for people with CP, football for amputees, powerchair football).
